Good and Green Smoothies

Yup, you guessed it. Spinach is the “green” in this green smoothie recipe. Skeptical about sipping your leafy greens through a straw? I was too when a friend suggested I try a spinach smoothie. Several bags of spinach and lots of blending later and I’m hooked on the tasty green drinks!

Here are a few tips for adding greens to your morning smoothie:

  • If you’re new to green smoothies, try a spinach fruit smoothie recipe. Spinach is mild and has a fresh flavor so it tastes great in smoothies.
  • Already love spinach smoothies? Try adding other greens like the leaves of kale, Swiss chard or romaine lettuce.
  • Any greens you use should be very fresh and cleaned well. Even “prewashed” greens should be rinsed before using.
  • Blend well. Greens should be completely liquefied into the smoothie.

Greek Yogurt: MIY (make-it-yourself)

Sure, you can buy Greek yogurt…but it’s more fun to make-it-yourself. All you need is a colander, a kitchen towel and some time. Learn how to make Greek yogurt from Mark Bittman of the The New York Times.

Tips for making your own Greek yogurt:

  • Keep fat in check. Start with low-fat or fat-free plain yogurt.
  • Check the label. Choose yogurt without added gelatin or other thickeners. Gelatin binds the liquid, preventing it from draining away.
  • Stay cool. Keep yogurt refrigerated during the straining process.
